House to Home: Gathering

Form and Function.

This client came to me with a very typical problem — they disliked the traditional living/dining room space, which therefore went unused. They wanted help creating a functional space they felt drawn to that focused on gathering, connection and relaxation.

We started with a custom, solid wood dining table that would be the strong foundational piece — holding up to whatever family, friends and entertaining would throw at it. The table extended to allow for larger entertaining and we had an extra bench built for additional seating when needed.

Comfort meet Style.

For the living room space, we removed the traditional sofa-loveseat scenario, since it wasn’t resonating with their aesthetic.

We created a sitting area centered on a set of nesting cocktail tables. We then added four cozy chairs that swivel, allowing flexibility and a little whimsical fun — perfectly capturing the family’s personality. This also formed a literal circle of togetherness.

This works beautifully both for the family as a unit, or for entertaining. The chairs can be turned to face the dining room as well to open the circle and connect with the whole room.

Modern Flare.

To compliment the dining table, as well as to create a connection piece between the two spaces, a custom cabinet unit was added that now sits directly between the living and dining areas, serving as a buffet, add storage for glasses and serving pieces, and to display a specifically curated selection of art. A custom drawer was installed in the pieces to store a few select bottles of wine. This now serves as a visual focal point that is a direct representation of the family’s style, as well as being a functional piece that helps make the room more inviting. This space is now used regularly as the centre for connection, and is loved by the whole family.

We moved into our home in 2010 and knew immediately we would be changing the living/dining room; in 2017 it was still exactly the same.  I knew what I wanted but just wasn’t able to execute my vision, and with my husband and I disagreeing on almost everything, it seemed it was a project that wasn’t to be.  This is when I reached out to Angela, and I am so happy I did!  Angela was patient and helped guide us to the right designs for us, by giving us advice and ideas, but never pushed.  It was such a pleasure to work with Angela and I cannot thank her enough for giving me the wonderful space we now enjoy with our friends and family.
